Renton, WA – February 24, 2025

Ryan McIrvin today announced his candidacy for King County Council, District 5. With nearly a decade of public service on the Renton City Council, McIrvin has championed policies that make neighborhoods safer, housing more affordable, and transit more accessible. Now, he’s ready to bring his leadership and results-driven approach to the County Council. He is running to succeed De'Sean Quinn who was appointed on a short-term basis to fill the seat vacated by Dave Upthegrove, who moved on to serve as Commissioner of Public Lands.

“Leadership is about showing up, listening, and delivering results,” said McIrvin. “I am running because I’ve dedicated my career to making life better for families, businesses, and communities. I’m ready to bring fresh ideas to the County Council and develop practical, forward-thinking policies that enhance the quality of life for all South King County residents.”

McIrvin is committed to engaging with residents and addressing community needs through collaborative leadership. “As our region continues to grow, we must be proactive in addressing key challenges. We must work together to ensure public safety with community-focused solutions, foster economic growth by supporting small businesses and workforce development, expand access to affordable housing through smart policies and strategic investments, and improve transportation infrastructure for greater safety, accessibility, and efficiency.”

Beyond his role on the City Council, McIrvin serves as the Director of Government and Community Relations at the University of Washington Bothell, where he builds partnerships that strengthen education, economic development, and public policy at the local, state, and national levels.

McIrvin lives in Renton with his wife, Dr. Stefanie McIrvin, and their two daughters, Molly and Lena. Stefanie currently serves as President of the Renton School Board.

McIrvin will kick off his campaign with a community launch event later this spring, where he will share his vision for South King County and discuss how to tackle pressing issues like public safety, housing, and transportation. Voters will ultimately decide the next King County Council representative for District 5 in the November 2025 election.

McIrvin’s campaign is already earning support from community leaders and organizations committed to improving King County. More endorsements will be announced in the coming weeks.
